"For those searching for a vintage mid-century modern home in Bethesda, look at this one award-winning design located in Charred Oak Estates off Seven Locks Road. I am listing this house along with my Long & Foster colleague Sean Satkus.

An award winning design by builder Ernest Cook of Cook Enterprises, the 4/3 (plus office), 2,500 square foot home is being sold by the original owners. The house won the “contemporary” category in the first ever design contest of the Suburban Maryland Builders Association in 1963. The two-level home has a side-gable roof, slate-floor entry and open living room/dinning room with wall of windows overlooking a nearly 1/2 acre wooded lot. There are vintage mid-century details throughout house from kitchen to baths to lighting, including an original George Nelson saucer lamp in the kitchen. You can view more images here.

Here's the open dining/living room with wall of glass.

Vintage kitchen with original Nelson lamp
requested by owner.

Master bath with original tiling and vanity.

Glass wall of living room looks out onto
the wooded .46 acre lot.

There are two fireplaces, including a brick-wall fireplace in the large living room/dining room. The house has two entrance ways, including one off the large double carport. The hardwood floors have been refinished and the interior/exterior of have been painted, including those retro orange doors that you see.

I will be holding the house open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13. Hope to see you there."

  1. Purchasing a house and turning it into your home comes into the list of very important and exciting activities of your life. It is a buy for keeps. You must consider every point before buying your house and before choosing the builder of your house. The home builder must be scrutinized before you give them the contract - the responsibility to build your abode. Customize your dream homes with energy efficient and highly durable facilities with Maryland Home Builders.

  2. Viola,

I certainly think you've missed the mark by posting this McMansion propaganda here. The lovers of Mid Century Modern aesthetic scoff, wholeheartedly, at your interpretation of a "dream home". Builders killed the architect-designed residence. And with that death came the awful structural existence plaguing the sub-suburbs of the now crippled (thanks to builders like you) economy. You've over built over produced crap on postage stamp lots for too long.

My eyes are shut tight in hopeful wishing that builders will revert back to the common sense of unique, appropriately-sized homes. But in order to do this, architects must be invited back to the table.

It's a brave new world, and frankly there's no room for you in it.

    Cheers,

    -Baz
